This is a near fine (almost like new) leather-bound hardcover. 1978 Easton Press Collectors Edition. 100 Greatest Books Ever Written. Finely bound in olive green genuine leather, this edition also features all 3 page edges tipped in gold gilt, gold design front and gold title/author lettering along spine. The edition if highlighted with a hubbed (raised) spine, and gold moire fabric endpapers front and back. The binding is tight and straight with Smyth sewn binding and concealed muslin joints. There is a gold satin ribbon bookmark attached. Medium octavo book size or 6.5" x 9.5" with 416 pages.
The Return of The Native by Thomas Hardy was originally published in 12 installments, 1878. Initially Hardy found publishing the novel to be difficult because of controversy themes. Once published, it became one of his most highly regarded novels.
This edition is finely illustrated with wood engravings by Agnes Miller Parker. The frontispiece of Hardy was specially commissioned.
