This is a very good set of two hardcover. 1961 Encyclopedia Britannica, Part of the Set of Great Ideas Program published in the 1960's by Britannica. This set features Volume l and Volume ll of Imaginative Literature. This set of two volumes is crisp and clean inside and out. The pages are still crisp and clean with no foxing or markings seen. The bindings are tight and straight. Hardcover boards are done in tan "linen looking" bindings with title lettering front and title/series lettering along spine. Standard octavo book size or 6" x 9".
Encyclopedia Britannica published a series known as The Great Ideas Program that was a reference for readers to subjects ranging from Literature to Science and Math to Philosophy and Ethics and more. The selection by Mortimer J. Alder and Seymour Cain features great literary classics with reading lists and self-testing questions for the reader.
Imaginative Literature gives selections from Homer, Virgil, Chaucer, Rabelais, and more in Volume 1 and moves to Milton, Fielding, Goethe, Melville, Tolstoy and more in Volume ll. Volume One preface is from Saul Bellow and Volume Two preface is from Joseph Wood Krutch.
