1989 Pulitzer Prize winner for General Non-Fiction, A Bright and Shining Lie by Neil Sheehan is about U.S. Army lieutenant colonel John Paul Vann and the United States involvement in the Vietnam War. The book also won the National Book Award for Nonfiction in 1988. Vann was critical of both the Saigon regime and United States military command. He argued that many of the tactics used were alienating the population and counterproductive.
The book reveals the truth of the war and the arrogance and corruption of the military system of the 1960's. His views and criticism of the military leaders fell on deaf ears and he left the army. He returned in 1965 as a civilian and rose to become the first American civilian to wield a generals command in war during the pacification program.
The book is a memorable work on the Vietnam tragedy which squandered much of America's resources and most precious asset - her military soldiers.
