Sorry, this item has sold.

This is near fine (almost like new) leather-bound hardcover. 1979 Easton Press Collectors Edition. This copy is crisp and clean inside and out. Easton Press provided a bookplate to new owners for their books. This copy has no accompanying bookplate, nor is there one affixed anywhere inside, therefore near fine, almost like new. The inside pages are still crisp and clean, graced with green silk moire fabric endpapers front and back. The edition is bound in genuine olive green leather with gold gilt design front and back along with gold lettering along the handsome hubbed (raised) spine. All three page edges are tipped in gold gilt with barely any wearing to gilt as is often found in vintage gilt books. The binding is done in fine Smyth sewn binding and is tight and straight. Attached gold satin bookmark. Imperial octavo book size or 9" x 11" with 176 pages including notes.

This edition of Oresteia by Aeschylus from Easton Press has been translated from the Greek by E.D.A. Morshead with in intro by Rex Warner and includes a publishers preface. It is finely illustrated by Michael Aryton. The colour frontispiece of Aeschylus was specially commissioned for the edition.
The three plays composing the Oresteia were first performed in Athens in 458 B.C. The earliest printed editions appeared in 1518. The three plays are: Agamemnon, The Libation Bearers, and the Eumenides. Themes range from revenge versus justice and vendettas versus litigation. Is justice through revenge appropriate or should justice only be applied via the law? Revenge is a principle motivator in the plays and scholars speculate on if the work was influenced by developments in Athens and the democratic reformer Ephialtes.
