This is a near fine (almost like new) leather-bound hardcover. 1980 Easton Press Collectors Edition. This copy is crisp and clean. Easton Press gave new owners an accompanying bookplate with their book but this copy does not have the accompanying bookplate, nor is one affixed inside anywhere. Therefore, near fine, almost like new. The edition is bound in genuine Burgundy leather with gold gilt design front and back and gold gilt lettering along the hub (raised) spine. All three page edges tipped in gold gilt and there is barely a hint of wearing to the gilt as is often found in vintage gilt books. Inside pages are crisp and clean and graced with gold silk moire fabric endpapers front and back. Attached gold satin ribbon bookmark. The fine binding is tight and straight featuring Smyth sewn binding. Royal octavo book size or 6.75" x 10" with 197 pages.
This edition of two plays by Molière from Easton Press has been translated by H Baker and J. Miller with an intro by Henri Peyre. It is finely illustrated by Serge Ivanoff and includes a publishers preface. The colour frontispiece of Molière was specially commissioned for the edition.
From the preface: "Molière is acclaimed not only as the father of modern French comedy, but as without rival in the comic exposition of human character, and as a dramatist whose prose dialogue is unequalled outside the plays of Shakespeare". The two plays in this edition are Tartuffe and The Would-Be Gentleman.
