This is a near fine (almost like new) leather-bound hardcover. 1979 Easton Press Collectors Edition. This copy is crisp and clean inside and out. Easton Press provided a bookplate for new owners with each book. This copy does not have the accompanying bookplate, nor is one affixed inside anywhere. Therefore, near fine, almost like new. The pages are crisp and clean. The edition is bound in genuine black leather with gold gilt design front and back cover with gold title lettering along the handsome hubbed (raised) spine. All three page edges are tipped in gold gilt with barely any rubbing of the gilt which is often found in vintage gilt. The binding is tight and straight, done in fine Smyth sewn binding with concealed joints. Inside pages are graced with burgundy silk moire fabric endpapers front and back. There is only a hint of shelf wear to front/back cover. Super octavo book size or 7" x 11" with 208 pages.

This edition of Plato, Dialogues on Love and Friendship by Easton Press has been translated from Greek with intro and analysis by Benjamin Jowett with a preface by Whitney J. Oates. It is finely illustrated by Eugene Karlin. The color frontispiece of Plato was specially commissioned for the edition. Plato's writings were first translated from the Greek to Latin in the 9th century. The Lysis and the Symposium relates Plato's view on love and friendship, and the Phaedrus (included in this volume) adds to the views. Discussions with Socrates regarding love and friendship, and philosophical and rhetorical are featured in the Phaedrus along with friendship versus love.
