This is a near fine (almost like new) leather-bound hardcover. 1979 Easton Press Collectors Edition. This copy is crisp and clean inside and out. Originally, Easton Press supplied new owners with a bookplate accompanying the book. This copy does not include the bookplate nor is it affixed inside with owner information, therefore near fine, almost like new. This handsome Collectors Edition is bound in maroon leather with golf gilt design front and back and gold gilt title/author lettering along the spine which is accented with a hub (raised) spine design. The binding is tight and straight and features Smyth sewn binding with concealed joints. All three page edges are tipped in gold gilt and there is barely any wearing to the gilt as is often found in vintage gilt books. The inside pages are crisp and clean and graced with silk moire grey fabric endpapers front and back. There is an attached grey satin bookmark. It is a larger hardcover, Imperial Octavo book size or 9" x 11" with 604 pages.
This collectors edition of The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky by Easton Press has been translated by Constance Garnett, revised, with an intro by Avrahm Yarmolinsky and is illustrated with lithographs by Fritz Eichenberg. The color frontispiece of Dostoevsky was specially commissioned for the edition. There is also a publishers preface.
The Brothers Karamazov was originally published in serial form, appearing in appearing in The Russian Messenger in 1879-1880. It was also published in book form in 1880 in Moscow. It is a philosophical novel with themes of free will and morality. Overall, the book was well received with only a few literary critics. It remains one of the greatest novels of all time.
