This is a very good hardcover, NO accompanying slipcase, slipcase missing. 1940 Nonesuch Press/Heritage, London. This copy is very good inside and out. The pages are clean with only very light natural tanning from age and no foxing or marks seen. The binding is tight and straight. Hardcover boards feature designed front and title/author on spine. NOTE: the spine is faded from age but lettering still legible and clear. There is light shelf wear to hardcover boards mostly along edges/corners. Larger size, royal octavo book size or 7" x 10" with 387 pages.
Dangerous Liaisons, a novel by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos was first published by 1782 and known as Les Liaisons Dangereuses. This English edition was printed by Fanfare Press, London, on paper especially made at the River Mills in France. The illustrations by Chas Laborde were reproduced in Paris by G. Duval and coloured in by M. Beaufumê with figurines drawn by Berthed Wolpe.
It is considered one of the first psychological novels as two unscrupulous characters delight in evil and the misery it brings their victims. The pair (previous lovers) delight in ruining others and was seen as a depiction of corruption and immorality. The book is "letter" written by characters to each other and the novel was adapted into film and stage.
