This is a very good hardcover. 1895 Dodd Mead Publishing New York. This copy is clean inside and out. The pages have acquired light natural tanning from age but are free of foxing or marks. The binding is tight and straight. The hardcover boards are illustrated front in green landscape design and lettering and is the title/author lettering along spine. There is only light wear of cover at corners/edges. It is a good and solid copy. Designed as more of a "pocket book", this edition was designed for easy carry in pocket or purse to read anywhere. It is a smaller hardcover, 18mo or 4" x 6" with 218 pages not including the very interesting "Popular Books from Dodd Mead" advertising section at the end of the book, comprising an additional 28 pages.
Beside the Bonnie Brier Bush was published in 1894 by John Watson under the pen name Ian Maclaren. This collection of stories was his first publication and depicted rural Scottish life. It was also one of his most popular works. Based on his experiences as a Free Church minister the book captured tales of family life, humor and delightful Scot dialogue. It was extremely popular.
