This is a good leather bound hardcover. 1899 Scribner Publishing. This copy is good inside and out. The pages have acquired light natural tanning from age but no foxing seen. Bound in soft flexible calf-leather, a common binding for the times, this is considered a "pocket book". Pocket books were small books designed for easy carry, slipped into a pocket or purse for reading anywhere. The binding on this copy is actually still very good with the pages tight and straight. Top page edges tipped in gold. Brown leather cover with gold lettering front and spine is also remarkably good with light wearing and a spot where sticker removed front cover. Bottom spine there is wearing to cover exposing binding but pages tight inside. 16mo book size or 4" x 6" with 224 pages. The ribbon bookmark is no longer attached but present inside.

The Lion and The Unicorn by Richard Harding Davis is a collection of short stories that include The Lion and The Unicorn, On The Fever Ship, the Man with One Talent, and The Vagrant. Davis was best known for his journalism but did write occasional fiction. He was the first war journalist to cover the Spanish American War and his articles helped Teddy Roosevelt in his political career. Most of his short fiction stories were viewed as amusing with a twist on fables of old. The Lion and The Unicorn tells the story of two journalists sent to England to cover King Edward Vll and the coronation. They soon become involved in a political scandal involving a member of the royal family. Colorful characters bound for a short story and include a beautiful American heiress, and English aristocrat, and a journalist who will stop at nothing for a story.
