The Last Valley, Dien Bien Phi and the French Defeat in Vietnam by Martin Windrow is subtitled The Battle That Doomed the French Empire and Led America Into Vietnam. It is a masterful account of military history and an account of a battle that altered the course of modern history. In December 1932, the French army occupying Vietnam challenged the elusive Vietnamese army to engage in a decisive battle. French paratroopers landed and were quickly isolated and besieged by the Vietnamese in a small place called Dien Bien Phu. The hunters became the hunted and were outgunned and outmanned. A defeat loomed and the French appealed to the United States for help. The vice president, Richard Nixon and Air Force general Curtis Le May devised a plan, but it was blocked by President Eisenhower. Ultimately the French were defeated and Vietnam was divided at U.S. insistence and the short-lived Republic of Vietnam was created.
