This is a near fine (almost like new) hardcover with dust jacket. 2004 Da Capo Press. This copy is crisp and clean inside and out. The pages are still crisp and clean with no markings seen. The binding is tight and straight. Grey hardcover boards under jacket are also near fine with barely a hint of shelf wear. It is a masterful account of military history and an account of a battle that altered the course of modern history. In December 1932, the French army occupying Vietnam challenged the elusive Vietnamese army to engage in a decisive battle. French paratroopers landed and were quickly isolated and besieged by the Vietnamese in a small place called Dien Bien Phu. The hunters became the hunted and were outgunned and outmanned. A defeat loomed and the French appealed to the United States for help. The vice president, Richard Nixon and Air Force general Curtis Le May devised a plan, but it was blocked by President Eisenhower. Ultimately the French were defeated and Vietnam was divided at U.S. insistence and the short-lived Republic of Vietnam was created.
