This is a very good hardcover, NO dust jacket, jacket missing. Circa mid 1920's A.L. Burt Publishing Co. This copy is very good inside and out. The pages do have light natural tanning from age but no serious foxing or markings seen. The binding is tight and straight. Maroon hardcover boards with gold title/author/publisher lettering on spine are also very good with only very light shelf wear. Crown octavo book size or 5" x 8" with 617 pages. There are 6 pages of A.L. Burt "Home Library" title advertising at the end of the book. The advertising lists the title in the Burt Home Library series and lists the titles at 1.25 price each. A.L. Burt published until 1937 and in the early to mid 1920's published a series of popular titles listed as The Home Library. The books sold for 1.00 - 1.25 each for the later titles and were popular by allowing average readers to collect classic literature titles in a nice binding format. They were originally published with dust jackets and the jackets were changed in the 1930's to overall white simple jackets.

One of the greatest of English novels, Thackeray's Vanity Fair is a satirical but far from unfeeling account of English society in the Napoleonic era. We meet Amelia, the sheltered daughter of a city merchant, who is a good-hearted, trusting and insipid; and Becky an orphan of humble origins is a resourceful harpy with social ambitions. The marriage of Becky to Rawdon alienates his wealthy aunt, and the couple are obliged to live on their wits. Amelia's marriage to George causes her husband to be disinherited by his father. The story is timeless, the narrative of this edition takes the engaging cast to their changed destinies on or near the field of Waterloo. Readers then follow the fortunes of the extraordinary characters in the wake of Waterloo. Amelia has lost her husband while Becky perfects the art of living well on nothing.
