The father lost all the families money in a poor investment just before his death. Forced to give up their comfortable lifestyle, the family moves to London to seek aid from an uncle. But, the uncle has no desire to help the family and despises Nicholas. The themes of the book center around social injustice and greed. It remains a staple in classic literature today.
