This is a very good set of two hardcovers. This two volume set is from the Limited Numbered Edition published by George Sproul 1924, from set # 222 of 1000. Both hardcovers are very good inside and out given age. There is only light natural tanning to pages from age and they are clean. Illustrated frontispiece opposite title page still has tissue guard in place both volumes. The binding is tight and straight. Maroon hardcover boards with gold design and lettering are also very good and solid. The covers are clean with only light wearing, Volume ll has a very small minor "bump" middle front. Top page edges tipped in gold with only light wearing. Both are crown octavo book size or 5.5" x 8". This was originally published in a 30 volume set of a limited number of 1000. This selection is from that set and includes Our Mutual Friend Volume One and Volume Two only. The set as issued was # 222 of 1000 copies. The gold design and title/author/publisher on covers is still intact with only light wearing.
Written in 1865, Our Mutual Friend by Charles Dickens is the last novel from the beloved author. In this novel the themes of social class and satire combine to create what critics called a most "sophisticated" novel. When a lonely and estranged miser dies, his fortune is to go to his son on one condition. He must marry a woman with whom he has no knowledge of and has never met. Upon his return trip from exile imposed by his father, he confides in a fellow traveler who then plots to murder him. The novel is one of Dickens most complex and cynical.
