This is a very good hardcover with dust jacket. 1984 Octopus Books Edition. This copy is very clean inside and out. The pages have light natural tanning from age but are clean with no markings seen. The binding is tight and straight. Navy blue hardcover boards under jacket are almost like new with barely a hint of shelf wear. The dust jacket is also almost like new, clean and shiny with only a hint of shelf wear. Medium octavo book size or 6.5" x 9" with 447 pages.
Moby Dick and Billy Budd by Herman Melville are two novels in one edition, complete and unabridged. The classic tale of Moby Dick needs no introduction. Written in 1851, it is Ishmael's narrative of the quest for Moby Dick by obsessed Ahab, captain of the Pequod. Originally published as The Whale in 3 volumes, it was later that same year published as a single volume called Moby Dick or The Whale.
Billy Budd is a novella which was unfinished at the time of Melville's death. It was transcribed and published in 1924 and became second to Moby Dick in Melville's classic works. It tells the story of a sailor who inadvertently kills his false accuser and although all realize the crime was accidental, the law of mutiny must be applied. The novella has been adapted into film, play and opera.
