This is a very good 4 volume set of hardcovers with accompanying slipcase. 1956 Simon & Schuster Publishing. All 4 volumes in this set are in very good condition inside and out. The pages only have light natural tanning from age but no foxing or markings seen inside. The bindings are tight and straight. Each volume is bound in blue cloth with gold title/author/publisher lettering along spine. They are all very good outside with only a hint of shelf wear to hardcovers. The accompanying slipcase is in very good condition. There is some wearing of the paste-down description of the volumes on the side of slipcase but overall very good. Each volume is standard octavo book size or 6" x 9" and features an orange top stain to top page edges as bound by publisher.
The World of Mathematics is a lavish selection of writings by the world's great mathematicians. 133 books, essays, stories and mathematical diversions are included - from Rhind Papyrus of Egypt to Einstein's theories, from Archimedes on "Poppies and the Universe" to Lewis Carroll's logical nonsense.
The mathematics of space and motion and the physical world is presented in the writings of Galileo, Helmholtz, and others.
The selections are woven together by commentary of James R. Newman.
