George T. Stevens was a Civil War Surgeon who somehow found time to record his narrative of the Civil War. This book is considered one of the earliest and best personal narratives of the war, and one of only a handful written by doctors who served. Stevens wrote about some of the most historic battles of the war - Antietam, Gettysburg, and the Peninsular Campaign. He wrote of his disdain for Gen. George McClellan and his praise for 6th Corp commander, John Sedgwick. The book gives insight on what it was like to be in medical service during the war. After the war he returned to practice medicine in New York.
