Oldest Living Confederate Woman Tells All by Allan Gurganus is an epic historical novel of the South during and after the Civil War. Lucy is the widow of the last surviving Civil War soldier and is 99 years old. Her tale offers an array of characters from aristocrats to commoners, Lee to Lincoln, and portrays the South as a realm where fact and fiction are both true. The story offers views from the common foot soldier to the combat throughout the South. Most of all, it is a portrait of one woman's struggle against a seemingly unending war. Her memory pivots from Fort Sumter to the Challenger disaster spanning decades and defining the war and where it left her.
