Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes is one of Robert Louis Stevenson's early works and a classic of outdoor literature. The work recounts his 12 day solo hike through the mountains of Cévennes in France. The only other character in the book is Modestine, a stubborn donkey that Stevenson found never quite get control over. It presents camping and hiking as an outdoor recreational activity. It presents the sleeping bag in its first presentation as a necessity for sleeping outdoors. Many thought Stevenson crazy for sleeping outdoors and traveling alone as there were robbers and wolves about. Nonetheless, he carried on and provides philosophy for his adventure.
