In 1761, Jean Calas was accused of the murder one of his sons. Initially the family said the son was murdered but later claimed he committed suicide and they tried to cover it up. He was subsequently tried, convicted and executed for the crime of murder, all the while professing his innocence.
Voltaire, famed French philosopher, was drawn into the case which he investigated and determined Calas was in fact innocent. Voltaire then began a campaign to exonerate Calas and his efforts went all the way to King Louis XV who later did in fact exonerate Calas posthumously. Hence, The Calas Affair.
