This is a near fine (almost like new) hardcover with accompanying slipcase. 1964 Heritage Press edition. This copy is crisp and clean inside and out. The pages are still crisp, clean and no markings seen. The binding is tight and straight. Blue hardcover boards are decorated front and back with silver title/author lettering on spine. The accompanying slipcase is also near fine with only a hint of shelf wear and sun fading. Royal octavo book size or 7" x 10" with 406 pages including notes.
This special edition of James Fenimore Cooper's The Spy a Tale of the Neutral Ground is finely illustrated throughout by Henry C. Pitz and includes an intro by John T. Winterich.
This was Cooper's second novel published in 1821 and the plot is set during the American Revolution. The novel was an immediate success The novel opens after the British spy Major John André was hanged and General Benedict Arnold's deceit revealed. The principal character is actually a peddler but suspected of being a spy by high echelons of the American command.
