The Rise and Fall of the Cleveland Mafia by Rick Porrello was a long-awaited history for Mafia buffs. The story persisted in magazines and newpaper articles but was overlooked in history books. It describes the Sugar War, a Prohibition-era series of conflicts over control of corn sugar, the primary ingredient in hooch or boot-leg booze. The book offered the first detailed look at the life of Angelo "Big Ange" Lonardo. Big Ange boldly avenged his father's murder during the Sugar War and rose through the ranks of the Cleveland Mafia to become its boss.
It explores the rise of the Cleveland Mafia to third rank after New York and Chicago. Through the sworn testimony of Big Ange, readers learn about the secret life of Dr Joseph Romano, the mystery surrounding his murder which was unsolved for 5 decades but revealed in the book.
