This is a narrative of captivity and generally speaking most captivity narratives are of Europeans and Americans held by indigenous peoples. They have a definitive place in history and literature. This book covers Barbary captivity narratives. They are accounts of English people held by pirates of Barbary. They are autobiographical accounts from three sailors held captive by Tripoli. Over 30 illustrations bring their stories to life. 700 American sailors were taken captive by the Barbary States of North Africa between 1785-1815. Their captivity prompted the newly independent United States to build a navy in the 1790's and to fight its first foreign war - against Tripoli - in the first decade of the 19th century. A handsome color illustrated map of the Mediterranean Region Circa 1800 compliments the historical intro by editor Robert J. Allison and sets the stage for the following historical narratives.
