This is a very good hardcover with dust jacket. 1994 Oxford University Press. PLEASE NOTE: there are some pages, not a majority but some, that have underlined sentences (see photo). But it does not interfere with text and only about 20 of the 242 pages show any mark/underlining. Rest of pages are crisp and clean. The binding is tight and straight. Tan hardcover boards under jacket are almost like new, barely a hint of shelf wear. The dust jacket is clean and shiny, also with barely a hint of shelf wear. Standard octavo book size or 6" x 9" with 242 pages.
In Warpaths Invasions of North America, Ian K. Steele provides a sweeping history of the numerous European invasions of North America, painting a dramatic picture of the centuries of warfare that shook the continent. It destroys the narrative of technologically advanced Europeans overrunning primitive savages. Instead, he reveals how indigenous peoples rose to the challenge of the invasions with martial and diplomatic skills, from the defeat of Ponce de Leon in 1513 to a negotiated peace with the British in 1765. For half a century American Indians repelled the Spanish in Florida, the Powhatan fought the English in Virginia, The Algonquin and Huron skillfully drew the French into their wars with the Mohawks, while the Wampanoag reached accommodations with the Pilgrims. The book combines social, military and cultural history to provide a portrait of the violence that gave birth to modern North America. Maps and drawings detail the history along with the engaging text.
