This is a good hardcover inside and out. Hurst Publishing New York circa 1910's. There is no print date inside but Hurst published reprints of popular titles in this format, 16mo or 4.5" x 6.6" size books w illustrated covers during 1900-1920. This copy is good inside and out. The pages inside are very clean with no foxing seen and just a hint of light natural tanning from age. No markings seen. The binding is tight and square with the only beginnings of separation inside back cover/last page. Still, it is acceptable and the pages are tight. The cover is showing wearing along corners and edges but the color illustrated front is good clean and not overly worn. The color front illustration is a paste down as frequently used for reprints of this format. 224 pages.
Renowned author Harriet Beecher Stowe first published this "self-help" book in 1866. It is an interesting insight into 19th century thoughts on personal growth and expectations towards social norms. Seven chapters include Fault-Finding, Irritability, Repression, Persistence, Intolerance, Discovery and Exactingness. It is an interesting read and sheds light on "acceptable" expectations and norms of the time that were believed to create a happy peaceful existence and home life.
