This is a very good hardcover. 1934 Smithsonian Institute Scientific Series, Volume Four. This copy is very clean inside and out. Inside pages are very clean with only a hint of light natural tanning from age. No foxing or markings seen. The binding is tight and straight. The maroon hardcover boards are also very good, clean with only a hint of shelf wear. Maroon boards have gold design and feature stamped Smithsonian Institute Washington seal on front cover. Gold title/series/author lettering along spine. Medium octavo size or 6.5" x 9.5" with 309 pages including index. This edition features rough cut page edges giving it a look of fine antique binding.
The Smithsonian Scientific Series was originally published in 1929 and consisted of 12 volumes. This is Volume 4 of the Series. The editor in chief was Charles Greeley Abbot, Secretary of the Smithsonian at the time. This edition title is; The North American Indians an account of the American Indians North of Mexico, Compiled From the Original Sources. The author is Rose A. Palmer. Contents include The Stone Age of North America, In Arctic Snows, The Eskimo, League of Five Nations, Cliff Dwellers, West Coast Tribes, Myths and Legends, and Indians in History. The book features numerous vintage photos and several color plates. 31 plates in all. The handsome edition is meticulously researched from archives, documents and historical accounts.
