This is a very good hardcover, NO dust jacket, jacket missing. First Edition 1934 Simon & Schuster Publishing. This copy is very good inside and out. PLEASE NOTE: Previous owners name has been marked out on Publishing copyright page, top corner and above First Edition statement (see photo). The rest of the pages are very clean, no other markings seen and only very light natural tanning from age. No foxing seen. The binding is tight and straight. Green cloth hardcover boards are also very good given age. Light shelf wear to hardcover boards but Charles Dickens on front cover and title on spine still legible, showing light fading. Most shelf wear to cover is along top edges and corners. Overall graded very good. Crown octavo size or 5" x 8" smaller hardcover with 128 pages.
Charles Dickens wrote "The Life of Our Lord" for his own children during the years 1846-1849. It was withheld from the public and for his children only. Dickens refused publication during his lifetime as he felt it was a personal letter to his children. The manuscript was guarded for 85 years. In 1933 Henry, his youngest child, died just before Christmas and bequeathed the manuscript to his wife, directing her to do what she thought was right, and she gave the rights to publish the manuscript to Associated Newspapers LTD, U.S. This edition includes and closes with two prayers.
The TRUE FIRST AMERICAN EDITION was a prepublication copy from Associated Newspapers LTD in the U.S. ( a substantially more expensive First Edition) and Simon & Schuster published their First Edition which is considered a First Edition as Associated Newspapers was technically a prepublication edition.
