This is a very good hardcover, NO slipcase, slipcase missing. Heritage Press New York 1944. This copy is very good inside and out. There is light natural tanning to pages from age but no serious foxing seen inside. The pages are clean and appear free of markings. This edition has given special care to design. The black cover features a handsomely embossed design on front cover, which was meticulously created from a special drawing by the illustrator, then sculpted, and then used in the form of "embossed die" to create the raised embossed front cover. Gold title/author/publisher lettering grace the spine. The cover is very good with only very light shelf wear. The binding is tight and straight. Overall a very nice rare and collectible copy of this classic literary tale. Super octavo size or 7" x 11" with 397 pages.

This Latin epic poem tells the story of Aeneas, a Trojan who fled the fall of Troy. Virgil developed the thesis that Aeneas, after the fall of Troy and his long wanderings, founded a Trojan settlement in Latium, the source of the Roman race. The poem was designed to celebrate the origin and growth of the Roman Empire. This edition is finely illustrated by Carlotta Petrina. She created a plate that serves as a half-title for each book in the poem. In addition, the front cover of the book was created from a special drawing of the subject contained in her plate for Book 1, which shows Venus cradling Aeneas in her arms as he starts his travels. The drawing was then sculpted, and that sculpture was molded into a stamping-die which "embossed died" the texture on the book cover.
