Black Elk Speaks, considered by many to be one of the spiritual classics of the century, tells the story of a remarkable Oglala Sioux medicine man and a great visionary. In addition to being possessed of spiritual gifts, Black Elk was a warrior and witness to some of the most crucial moments in the unfolding saga of the 19th century American West.
Black Elk was present at the battle of Little Bighorn, where Custer met his end. Black Elk was a distant cousin of Crazy Horse and was present at Crazy Horse's murder. He was present at the last battle of the Indian Wars, at Wounded Knee. This book is both the recounting of a great religious vision imparted to Black Elk when he was young, and it is the story of his people's attempt to dam the flood of the white man, sometimes by war and sometimes by spiritual means.
By the 1930's, Black Elk was living on the Pine Ridge reservation. John G. Neihardt, a midwestern poet, spent a fortnight with Black Elk in the spring of 1931. During this time, Black Elk recounted the stories of his life. This special illustrated edition is a fine title for any history library.
