This is a very good hardcover with dust jacket. 1967 Scribner Publishing Reprint. This copy is very clean inside and out. The pages are still crisp, clean and free of markings. There is barely any natural tanning of pages but inside front and back cover there is light tanning (see photo). The binding is tight and straight. Yellow hardcover boards under jacket are also very good with only a hint of shelf wear. The dust jacket is clean and shiny BUT is neatly price clipped inside front cover (see photo) and showing shelf wear along bottom edge including two small tears. Royal octavo size or 7" x 10" with 405 pages.
This edition of The Yearling by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings is illustrated by N.C. Wyeth. Multiple full color, full page illustrations from Wyeth highlight the book and text bringing the story to life. The classic story, originally published in 1938, follows the Baxter's living in rural Florida during the 1920's. Their only son desperately wants a pet but is reminded that they barely have enough food themselves, let alone a pet. The subplot, the hunt for an old bear along with the neighbors who are constantly fighting with the Baxter's, set the stage for the adoption of an orphaned fawn. The story of boyhood into manhood develops as the fawn becomes a threat to the family and difficult choices must be made. Classic tale that has held its literary place through generations.
