The three novels presented in this edition are the triumphs of Edith Wharton and her early career. The House of Mirth was her second novel and published in 1905. It achieved critical success with its biting satire of New York socialites and whose frail heroine is in the midst of adversity, having made poor social choices.
The Custom of the Country was written in 1913 and also shows the cruel side of the well-to-do, but the center of the novel is a viper, not victim. In both novels, Wharton explored the underside of posh turn-of-the-century New York.
Ethan Frome was written in 1911 and exposes the dark side of a different region; rural Massachusetts. It is one of her best known works taking place in cold, stark fields. Frome is caught by the mores of his village and his love for his wife's cousin, his one hope for happiness, can only end in tragedy.
