This non-fiction novel from John Berendt follows the story of an antique dealer on trial for murder. Set in the Deep South Savannah Georgia and Beaufort S.C. the Southern Gothic depicts eccentric personalities we see four trials take place in the murder of Danny Hansford by respected antique dealer Jim Williams, who was his employer.
The title makes reference to the hoodoo notion of "midnight", the time for good magic (11:30 to midnight) and evil magic (midnight to 12:30). The "garden of good and evil" refers to the cemetery in Beaufort where Dr Louis Buzzard ( husband of the folk-magic practitioner in the story) is buried. It is over his grave that she performed "magic" to ensure a successful result in one of the retrials of Mr Williams. The iconic image on the dust jacket quickly became one of the strongest and most compelling book covers.
