This book by Rod Gragg was a winner of the Fletcher Pratt Award for Civil War History. It is an exhaustive and complete analysis of the Fort Fisher battle. Known as the "Gibraltar of the South", Fort Fisher was the largest and most formidable fortification in the South. With 44 mounted guns and parapets 20 feet high and 25 feet thick, this stronghold was located 18 miles south of Wilmington, North Carolina. It protected the only Confederate seaport still accessible to blockade runners by August 1864. The North launched two all-out attacks on Fort Fisher before finally capturing it in August 1864. This book draws from research, official records, diaries, memoirs, letter and more to offer a comprehensive account of the battle for Fort Fisher.
