The Mill on the Floss by George Eliot was first published in 1860 in three volumes. Spanning 10+ years, the novel centers around two siblings, Tom and Maggie, who grew up at Dorlcote Mill on the River Floss in England. Set in the 1820's, Maggie is the protagonist and she is 9 yrs old when the novel starts. Her relationship with her brother and a romantic relationship with Philip, who is an intellectual and hunchback, comprise the narrative, along with a cousins fiancé, Stephen. Growing up, falling in love, along with Maggie's need for love and acceptance is a recurring theme, similar to other Eliot novels. This edition is finely illustrated in color by Wray Manning with an intro by David Daiches.
