The binding is tight and straight. Tan cloth hardcover boards under jacket are very good with light wearing. The dust jacket is very good but showing light shelf wear mostly along edges including very small tear bottom front right corner, but overall very good and clean. Imperial octavo size or 8.25" x 10" with 111 pages.
This edition of Lewis Carroll's classic story is illustrated with pictures by renowned artist-naturalist of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Walter Anderson. Anderson's Alice is no Victorian doll as she is in the famous illustrations by Tenniel, Rackham, and Disney. Instead, Anderson represents Alice as a rather Picasso-like figure, capturing her spirit and energy. Ninety-two pen-and-ink drawings accompany the complete text of Lewis Carroll's narrative. Anderson drew them late at night as he recovered from an illness. The story of Alice brought him comfort and inspiration as he placed her wonderland close to his own homeland by localizing Alice's adventures with backgrounds featuring the kinds of wildflowers and crabs that are native to the Gulf Coast.
Anderson was considered eccentric and very private. He often visited the islands in the Mississippi Sound where he wrote about nature and produced beautiful drawings and watercolors which have an enduring appeal.
