This is a very good paperback. 1988 University of California Press. This copy is very good inside and out. PLEASE NOTE: There is one section, between pages 166-167 (see photo) where binding is beginning to crack BUT pages not loose and still tight to binding. Price accordingly. Rest of binding very good. Inside pages are crisp and clean, free of markings. No foxing etc. The cover is very good and clean with only a hint of shelf wear. Only creasing along spine is where the binding is beginning to crack between pages 166-167. Trade paperback size or 6.5" x 9.5" with 698 pages including index.

This history of Dutch 17th century life explores the Dutch nation that invented itself from the ground up. Attaining unprecedented affluence while living in dread of being corrupted by such, the author draws on extensive documents and wonderfully reproduced art, he tells of bloody uprisings, the plague of tobacco and how the Dutch celebrated themselves while being maligned by their enemies.
