This is a near fine (almost like new) leather-bound hardcover. 1980 Easton Press Collectors Edition. Bound in full maroon leather with gold gilt design and lettering, this fine edition is near fine condition, crisp and clean inside and out with no markings, foxing etc seen. Page edges tipped in gold gilt. Fine binding is Smyth sewn not glued and printed in acid-neutral paper. Handsome gold fabric moire endpapers with attached silk ribbon bookmark. Hubbed spine finishes off the fine binding This is a true collectors edition with all the edition points of the most fine binding and not a simple leather-bound reprint. The binding is tight and straight. The pages crisp and clean. No attached bookplates or previous owner indications. The leather cover is near fine with only a hint of shelf wear to back.
This edition of The Red and The Black by Marie-Henri Beyle (Stendhal) is translated by C.K Scott-Montcrieff with an intro by Hamilton Basso. Illustrations by Rafaello Busoni. It is a historical novel originally published in 2 volumes in 1830. The novel centers around a young man and his desires to rise socially above his simple upbringing using talent, hypocrisy, hard work and deception. Ultimately, his passions will betray him. The novel is a commentary and analytic of social satire of French social order.
