This is a very good hardcover NO dust jacket. 1940-60's ? Vanguard Press. this copy is very clean inside and out. The pages are very clean and free of markings or foxing. First Published in 1938, this is a later printing, no identifying date BUT TRUE first 1938 editions of this title would have the endpapers illustrated with "500 hats" front and back, AND the hats would start from LARGE to SMALL hats across the endpapers in front and SMALL HATS to LARGE hats on back endpapers. This edition being offered in this listing has the illustrated "hats" endpapers BUT they are SMALL to LARGE hats on front endpapers and LARGE to SMALL hats on back endpapers, therefore identifying this as NOT a true first edition. Regardless, this early edition is still a collectible in very good condition. The inside pages are very clean, free of markings or foxing. The binding is tight and straight. The black hardcover boards w red trim are very good with light shelf wear and minor bumps to bottom right corners front and back. This is a quarto size hardcover or 9" wide x 12" tall with illustrations.
Written by Theodor Geisel under the pen name of Dr Seuss, this was the second book written by "Dr Seuss". Geisel collected hats and therefore got the idea for the book from his hat collection and while traveling on a train where he pondered what would happen if he threw the hat of a fellow passenger out the window. Would he simply grow a new one??? So it became a story and a much loved one along with the rest of Geisel, or Dr Seuss books.
