This is a good hardcover with dust jacket. Third Printing 1972 Farrar Straus & Giroux Publishing. This copy is very good inside. The pages only have a hint of light natural tanning from age and are free of foxing. The binding is tight and straight. Red hardcover boards under jacket are good with light fading and shelf wear. The dust jacket is clean, mostly shiny with light shelf wear and NOTE: see photos were inside back of jacket there is a small stain BUT it does not carry over to hardcover boards as shown in photo of back red boards. Medium octavo size or 6" x 9.5" with 622 pages. Illustrated maps inside front and back endpapers.
This novel is from Nobel Prize winning author Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn and is a fictional narrative about the defeat of the Imperial Russian Army at the Battle of Tannenberg in East Prussia. The first part of the novel is set at the outbreak of the First World War. The novel describes the Russian offensive into East Prussia which resulted in the encirclement and defeat of the Second Army of Gen. Samsonov by Hindenberg. This first English translation is by Michael Glenny.
