The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins is a mystery, detective novel that set the stage for future literary mysteries. Published in 1868, it was first serialized in Charles Dickens's magazine, All The Year Round. The Moonstone in the book is a diamond, inherited at 18 by a young English woman. The diamond holds a great religious significance and is extremely valuable. Legendary origins of the great Hope Diamond are incorporated into the story. The young woman who received the diamond for her birthday wears it all night for everyone to see. Later that evening, the diamond is stolen and turmoil and bad luck follow. The plot follows the path to explain the theft, identify the thief, and recover the stone.
