First published in 1963, The Shoes of the Fisherman is a novel by Australian writer Morris West. The novel concerns the election of a Ukrainian Pope in a dissection of Vatican politics. It was the best selling novel in America for the year of publication, 1963. It was inspired by the lives of two Ukrainian Catholic bishops. Both bishops were imprisoned, one of the bishops was released by the Khrushchev's administration in 1963, (the yr of the novels publication) and the other died in a Soviet gulag.
