This title is the second volume in William Manchester's 3-volume bio of Winston Churchill. In this book the author questions the assumption that Churchill's finest hour was as a wartime leader. During the years 1932-40, he was tested as few men are. Pursued by creditors, disowned by his own party, dismissed by the BBC and the social/political establishment as a warmonger, and he nearly lost his Parliament seat twice. Churchill stood alone against Nazi aggression. Despite his personal and political troubles, he established a vast underground intelligence network which provided him with complete and accurate information on Germany.
The 3 volume set is the definitive Churchill bio to this day.
