Published in 1944, this novel won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1945. It is the story of an Italian-American officer in Sicily during World War Two. Set during the Allied occupation of a fictional town in Italy. When asked what the town needs most, food is the first response, and second is a replacement for the 700 yr old bell that the Nazis melter down for arms. The bell was a sign of unity and pride for the town and the officer is moved by their dedication to it. He then sets forth to find the bell or a replacement.
