Published in 1932, this novel was the first of a trilogy featuring William "Studs" Lonigan, a young Irish-American growing up in Chicago. With his parents sure he is headed for glory, father wishing for a football star and mother hoping for a priest, young Lonigan see himself a tough guy. Shunning love thinking the young girl will admire his machismo, he is further entrenched in bravado after winning a tree fist-fight against the local bully. He soon begins to hang out with a rough crown and begins tormenting kids who stray into his "turf". Although he is still a young boy at the end of this novel, it is clear he is heading in a dangerous direction.
Controversy surrounded this novel as an attempt to ban the book happened in Youngstown Ohio in 1953, but was overruled in Federal Court.
