This is a very good hardcover. 1942 McGraw Hill Book Company. Fourth Edition, Sixth Impression. This copy is very good inside and out. The pages have some light natural tanning from age but are clean. There are a few pages with some sentences underlined in pencil, couple pages have small notation in margins, but overall they are unmarked with only a small number of page markings. There is some foxing inside front cover on blank endpapers, hint of foxing along some page edges but the text inside is clean and not overtly foxed. The binding is nice solid sewn binding, not glued, and it is tight and straight. Tan boards w gold title lettering on spine are very good. Only a hint of wearing to hardcover at corners. Octavo, standard size 7"x9". 400 pages including index.
This was one of McGraw-Hill publications in the agricultural sciences series that ran from 1917-1937. This edition is a 4th print 1942. The preface to the third edition noted advancements in the control of insects and insecticides in this edition only if their use was generally accepted at the time. In this 4th edition, as in the 3rd, common names of insects have been used and scientific names are used only if accepted at the time as there was changing scientific name use at the time. The book is generously illustrated with drawings and photos. 21 chapters cover specific orders of insects while other chapters cover insecticides, economic importance of insects, insect control, along with internal and external structure of insects. Overall this is a wonderful vintage reference for entomology.
