Published in 1948, the novel covers three soldiers in World War Two. Hailed as one of the best war novels written by an American, Shaw said he was trying to show the world its good and evil at an specific point in history.
The novel was adapted into film in 1958 and starred Marlon Brando, Montgomery Cliff and Dean Martin. The film was a success but as so many do, made changes to the original story in the novel.
