Rob Roy, one of the Waverley novels, by Sir Walter Scott was published in 1817. It is a historical novel, probably set around 1715, the year of the Jacobite Uprising when Scotland was in turmoil. The social, political and economic background to that event are an element in the novel but not directly addressed. But, it is a brutally realistic depiction of the conditions in Scotland, early 18th century. The novel does include a glossary of Scottish terms.
