This is a very good hardcover in slipcase. 1952 Heritage Press. This copy is very clean inside and out. The pages are crisp, clean and free of markings. The sewn binding is tight and straight. The handsome patterned cover front and back is in fine, like new condition. The slipcase is also very good with only a hint of shelf wear.
This edition from Heritage Press is based upon the edition of "The Georgics" printed by the Officina Bodoni at Verona for the Limited Editions Club. Intro by George F. Whicher and illustrated by Bruno Bramanti.
This is an epic poem by the Latin poet Virgil. The theme is agriculture but it is not a bucolic piece of poetry. The work is divided into 4 books, based on yearly timing of rising and setting stars. It was written somewhat as poetic instruction for care of land and creatures. But it was meant to engage the reader more so than to teach. Most readers of the time were elite land owners who would seldom perform manual labor.
