The Warden was written in 1855 by English novelist Anthony Trollope. It is the first book in the Chronicles of Barsetshire series, followed by Barchester Towers. The Warden, Mr Septimus Harding, oversees Hiram's Hospital, an almshouse supported by a charitable bequest. An almshouse is charitable housing provided to people in the community, often the poor. Trollope uses the novel to explore and illuminate human motivation and social morality. The novel was Trollope's first literary success.
