A distinctive poet of the colonial South and one of the best satirists of early America, Ebenezer Cooke has become notorious today as the hero of John Barth's The Sot-weed Factor (1960). But in his own time he achieved a measure of popularity as the author of the original Sot-weed Factor (1708), a burlesque account of the conditions, customs, manners, and inhabitants of Maryland at the turn of the 18th century.
This title is the first book-length study of this colonial satirist, lawyer and poet of Maryland. The authors well documented bio commentary reveals the contemporary influences on Cooke's writing and analyzes his poems.
